Good for the Goose, but not the Gander?

Given the current events and national news, politics seems to be on the tip of everyone's tongue.  No matter on which side you fall, there are many strong feelings and words being exchanged.  I am sure that many of you can determine my own standing with regards to politics.  I am not interested in debating, I will leave that to others with much more knowledge and savvy than I possess.  And the fact is, this is not a political forum, nor do I want it to be.  There are many other places online for that.  But being a place where I can empty my brain of all that rattles around in it, I wanted to share an observation.

Why is it when Bush was in office he was promoted as the devil incarnate or as Satan himself.  There were moves to impeach him and many on the left assumed he was trying to destroy our country.  And that was okay.

Well, now Obama is in office and suddenly any nay-sayers and those that promote him as having a socialist, communist agenda are being called intolerant, racist, and other horrible names.  Religion is being questioned and prayer for change is being criticized.  It is NOT okay to disagree with him according to those who were ready to impeach Bush.

I don't get it.  (Isn't this what the Democrats did for 2 terms prior?)  I have been reading vicious, snarling comments on Facebook and Twitter.  Really people, we all have an opinion, and we are all entitled to it.  We are NOT entitled to act like animals or savages, no matter who you voted into office or which party you belong to.  Clearly, there are both honorable Democrats and Republicans, just as there are those who are an embarrassment to each party.  And generalizations do no favors to anyone.  Facts are what matter; unfortunately, each side twists them to fit their vision.  I think we all can hold our own beliefs and stand up for them, while still respecting life and the dignity of fellow human beings.

Just had to get that out.  I am done now.  Carry on.

I understand that it is the nature of the beast, maybe I am just naive?

This is very interesting for me to read, because I see it in the opposite way.

For example, when Bush spent trillions of dollars for a war halfway across the world, he was championed and anyone who disagreed was vilified. But when Obama wants to spend trillions of dollars on what he believes will be improvements in our own country, he and those who support are vilified and those who oppose are freely and loudly voicing their disagreement.

I'm not saying that example is 100% accurate, but that is how I've been seeing it. Perhaps we (humans) tend to notice more when what we believe and those who hold our beliefs are being persecuted more than when the other side is?

This is definitely something for me to think about and keep in mind when I see political disagreements.

Caramama, I am sure that is what happens - each side feels it more when they are feeling persecuted. But, my goodness, the things I have seen out there in the name of "fairness and respect for all" being said. I equate it to the right-to-lifers who bomb abortion clinics. ?!? How does killing in order to promote life make sense? I may disagree with someone, but, unless their choice is out of complete ignorance, I respect them. I guess I expect everyone to do the same. I have many friends on both sides of the issue, and for the majority of people, each believes one way or the other in trying to do the best thing possible for this country (even though the "plan" may look a little different). This is just something that has been bothering me lately as I guess I don't understand. And it is bi-partisan, I don't mean to just vilify one group, but hearing the "other" side and reading their comments are what struck me initially as totally hypocritical.

Anyways, thanks for your thoughtful response!
